Supporting Biodiversity Through Nature-Inclusive Design on the Isle of Wight

Sealane Inshore was proud to collaborate with ecological innovators Artecology and project designers Mott MacDonald to deliver a sustainable solution for the Holborn Dock scheme.

Holborn Dock

Challenges and Objectives

The Holborn Dock scheme presented an opportunity to create a dynamic and supportive environment for local marine wildlife while achieving the practical needs of the dock infrastructure. Designers sought to incorporate ecological enhancements that would not only mitigate environmental impacts but actively foster biodiversity.

Sealane Inshore’s expertise in marine installations positioned the company as the ideal partner to bring Artecology’s nature-inspired designs to life.

Innovative Solutions

Sealane Inshore worked closely with the project team to install three bespoke habitat features developed by Artecology:

  1. Bouldnor Vertipools – Shallow, textured pools designed to mimic natural rock pool habitats, providing refuge and breeding grounds for marine species.
  2. Sandown Vertipools – A variation tailored to accommodate species in a more sediment-rich environment, enhancing adaptability to site conditions.
  3. Refugia Tiles – Handcrafted tiles with crevices and textures that mimic natural substrates, ideal for sheltering smaller organisms and encouraging biodiversity growth.

Each installation was carefully positioned to maximize ecological benefits while integrating seamlessly into the dock structure.

Sealane Inshore’s Role

Drawing on years of experience in inshore and marine construction, Sealane Inshore ensured the successful delivery of this project by:

  • Conducting precise and environmentally sensitive installations.
  • Collaborating with designers to adapt the installation process to unique site requirements.
  • Leveraging advanced equipment and skilled divers to guarantee the durability and safety of each feature.

Outcome

The Holborn Dock installations now serve as a living example of how infrastructure projects can incorporate ecological benefits. Early observations suggest the designs are already attracting marine life, highlighting the effectiveness of the nature-inclusive approach.
